How can you call yourself a human?

Asked the mirror on the wall.
Just because you have two feet and walk tall?
Or is it because you have evolved more than your peers?
Or only because you can express pain and joy with tears?
Just because you have institutions you can attend and earn a degree?
Or because you can captivate animals in cages and walk around free?
Have you forgotten why has God made you, you?
To develop a brain, nurture a heart and to all creations be fair and true…
Only the deserving get a human life they say…
Please answer yourself – have you really lived up to its precious worth in any way?

I recently received a mail asking to sign a petition against some people in New Delhi who brutally blinded a pet stray dog and beat him up. Supportive of the fact that such cruel people are a greater threat than what we perceive them to be, I signed the petition and shared it on my Facebook wall. I learnt today that the innocent canine friend passed on. I feel unnatural coming to terms with the fact that those who can brutally murder a dog for just barking exist as ‘humans’ in this world. Every life is precious and no one has the right to destroy it. In a nation proud of its peaceful heritage such events, coupled with countless similar ones, is unnerving. I truly hope that justice prevails.

Dear God!!!

Bestow those with strength and valour
Who will protect a woman from losing her honour
Who won’t ever raise their hand on children and women
Who will use their power to fight every ill omen
Bestow those with riches and wealth
Who will serve those who don’t have it in sickness and in health
Who will spend generously on others as well
Who will help the deserving excel
Who won’t discriminate on any basis and treat themselves as equal to all
Who will pick up those who fall
Bestow those with joy and happiness
Who will better this world with their natural goodness
Who can share their gift with everyone
Who will continue to live in hearts even after their time here is done
Who fill every soul with hope and solace
Who will make this world a much better place
Bestow those with divinity
Who treat other’s destiny with dignity
Who have all the power yet are humble and secure
Whose hearts are made of gold and like it are pure
Who can treat this world as one
With whom every battle for peace and justice is won
Bestow those with well-being’s wealth
Whose life and its longevity is good for everyone’s health
Who is an exemplar to all alive
Whose presence on earth make many thrive
Who is dedicated to the cause of the good of all
Who in the face of adversities also can walk tall
That is all we ask from you, dear God!
